Buying a Pilates reformer: the complete buying guide
A good Pilates reformer costs between €1,800 and €4,000 for home use and light studios, and from ± €7,400 for heavy studio models. When buying, pay particular attention to height (240–265 cm), number of springs (4 or 5), maximum user weight, whether it is foldable or stackable, and service and parts availability in the Netherlands.
A reformer is a significant investment. You are buying it for years, and it will take up a permanent place in your home or studio. In this guide, I list everything I tell customers in our showroom in Utrecht. This way, you know exactly which questions to ask yourself before ordering.
What exactly is a Pilates reformer?
A reformer is a bed-like frame with a sliding carriage on wheels. The carriage is connected to the frame by springs. By pushing against the foot bar with your feet or pulling on the ropes, you move the carriage against the resistance of the springs. This way, you train strength, stability, and mobility simultaneously, with minimal strain on your joints. You can read more background information in our article What is reformer pilates?.
Home reformer or studio reformer: what is the difference?
The biggest difference lies in intensity of use, space, and expandability. A home reformer is designed for a few sessions per week and is often foldable or mobile. A studio reformer runs multiple classes daily, usually has five springs, and is built to be heavier and more stable.
| Home reformer | Studio reformer | |
| Usage | 2–5 times per week, 1–2 people | Multiple lessons per day, many different users |
| Feathers | Usually 4 | Usually 5, adjustable |
| Storage | Often foldable or can be set upright | Fixed position; sometimes stackable |
| Max. user weight | ± 120 kg | ± 150 kg |
| Expand | Limited (box, jumpboard) | Tower, half Cadillac, platform, jumpboard |
| Price indication | €1.800 – €2.500 | €2.900 – €12.000+ |
Examples from our range: the Align-Pilates F3 is a foldable home reformer with 4 springs (€2,090). The Align-Pilates C8-Pro is a stackable studio model with 5 springs (from €2,890). BASI Systems is the top segment for professional studios, for example the BASI Pilates Cadillac (from €8,046.50).

How much space do you need for a reformer?
Calculate the length of the apparatus plus playing space around it. Most reformers are 240 to 265 cm long and 64 to 76 cm wide. In addition, you need space at the sides and the head end to step on and off and to work with the ropes.
| Model | Length | Width | Device weight | Feathers | Max. user | Storage |
| Align-Pilates F3 | 242 cm | 66 cm | 58 kg | 4 | 120 kg | Foldable (143.5 cm high) |
| Align-Pilates R8-Pro | 248 cm | 67 cm | 59 kg | 4 (+1 option) | 120 kg | Stackable |
| Align-Pilates C8-Pro | 244 cm | 66 cm | 70 kg | 5 | 150 kg | Stackable |
| Align-Pilates M8-Pro | 254 cm | 76 cm | 80 kg | 5 | 150 kg | Permanent spot |
| Balanced Body Allegro 2 | 239 cm | 64 cm | 70 kg | 5 | – | Permanent spot |
Rule of thumb: Keep at least 60 cm clear on both sides and at the head end. For a 245 cm reformer, this amounts to a clear floor area of approximately 3.1 × 1.9 meters. A folding model like the F3 takes up only half a square meter when stored. In the article How much space do you need for a reformer?, we delve deeper into dimensions and ceiling height.
What to look for when buying a reformer? Checklist in 7 steps
- Determine your goal. Do you train alone at home, give private lessons, or set up a studio? That determines whether you need a home or studio model.
- Measure your space. Use the rule of thumb above and also check if the device can be brought in via stairs and doors.
- Choose the number of feathers. Four springs are enough for most home workouts. Five springs provide finer resistance increments, useful if multiple people train with different strengths.
- Check the user sizes. Pay attention to the maximum user weight and whether the foot bar, shoulder blocks, and headrest are adjustable for tall or short users.
- Pay attention to the frame. Aluminium frames are lightweight and low-maintenance. Wooden frames (for example, BASI or Merrithew SPX versions with wood) have a warm appearance but are heavier.
- Consider expansions. Do you want to add a sitting box, jumpboard, or tower later? Then choose a model that supports those accessories.
- Ask for service. Are springs, ropes, and wheels available separately? How long is the warranty? Who helps with assembly? [CHECK warranty and assembly conditions]

How much does a Pilates reformer cost?
The price depends mainly on intensity of use and finish. Roughly speaking, you see three price classes:
| Price range | For whom | Examples |
| €1.800 – €2.500 | Home use, beginners and advanced | Align Pilates R8-Pro, F3 Folding |
| €2.900 – €4.000 | Intensive home use, private lessons, boutique studio | Align Pilates C8-Pro, A8-Pro, M8-Pro |
| €7,400 and higher | Professional studios, rehabilitation | BASI Systems reformer, reformer with half Cadillac |
Additionally, factor in extra costs for a sitting box, jumpboard, or extra springs. By comparison, a single group reformer Pilates class often costs €20–€30 in the Netherlands. Therefore, someone who trains twice a week will earn back the cost of a home reformer of ± €2,000 within two years.
Frequently asked questions about buying a reformer
Buying a reformer can raise many questions. We help you answer these questions.
Is a home reformer worth it?
Yes, if you train at least twice a week. You train when it suits you, and a home reformer pays for itself within a few years compared to group classes.
Can you train at home on a reformer as a beginner?
Yes, but preferably take a few lessons with a certified instructor first. That way, you learn the basic principles and the correct spring setting, and prevent injuries.
How many springs does a reformer need?
For home use, four springs are sufficient. Studios usually choose five springs, because this allows you to fine-tune the resistance for different clients.
How long does a reformer last?
A well-maintained reformer will last for many years. Springs are wear parts: replace them approximately every two years with intensive studio use. You can find them among our reformer springs.
How quickly is a reformer delivered?
Models in stock are usually delivered within 3 working days. Larger studio models may have a longer delivery time.
