What is a resistance band?

Your body is a weight in itself. You can use that in all sorts of ways during your workout. But the more you do an exercise, the stronger you become. At some point, you need more of a challenge, more resistance. Resistance bands offer a solution.

A resistance band is also called a fitness elastic or resistance band and is often made of rubber and latex. They are used for strength training, Pilates, yoga, step exercises, aerobics, and many other sports. You can do this at the gym, but they're also an ideal tool for use at home. This eliminates the need to purchase equipment or weights at home, which often take up more space. Plus, they're easy to take with you when traveling. You can keep your workout challenging wherever you want, so you're not dependent on a hotel or local gym.

What do you use resistance bands for?

Resistance bands are incredibly versatile. You can use them for a total-body workout, as this fitness band can be used to train almost every muscle in your body. They add an extra challenge to your workout, helping you get stronger and stronger. A major advantage is that you can target specific muscles with resistance bands. For example, you can specifically target your biceps or triceps in certain exercises, giving them optimal training.

You can also make a specific exercise more versatile by using a resistance band to target other muscles. An example is squatting with a band around your thighs. Squats primarily target the muscles on top of your thighs and your glutes. The fitness bands also force you to use more force on the muscles on the inside of your thighs.

Resistance bands are also effective for stretching. They allow you to stretch specific muscles. For example, if you can't touch your hands when you place your right hand over your head and your left hand underneath your back, you can still stretch the muscles by holding a fitness band with both hands. This also allows you to deepen the stretch.

Finally, resistance bands can actually provide relief for some exercises. A push-up, for example, is difficult for many people to perform, and training for it is challenging because you can't lift your entire body weight in one go. At the gym, and perhaps even at home, it's often possible to attach a long resistance band to a bar. Lean into it with your hips while doing a push-up. You'll notice that the resistance band supports you, making it easier to do. Over time, it will become increasingly effortless, and you might even be able to do push-ups without a resistance band.

Different types of resistance bands

When talking about resistance bands, you're talking about all sorts of shapes and sizes, and resistance bands in all sorts of materials and colors. They come in the following varieties:

  • Miniloop: short, continuous fitness elastics. They're primarily used for training your arms, legs, and glutes, for example, by wrapping them around your thighs.
  • Long loop: long, continuous fitness elastic bands. You can use these in various ways. For example, stand on them with both feet while pulling the band upwards with one arm.
  • Tube: a long elastic band with handles on both ends. These elastic bands also have multifunctional uses, for example, by pulling them apart to train the muscles in your chest, arms, and shoulders.
  • Roll: This is a long, rolled-up elastic cord from which you can cut a piece to the length you need. You can then use it as a tube or tie the ends together to create a loop.

The different types of resistance bands can be made of different materials. They are often made of rubber and contain latex. It's important to be aware of this for people with a latex allergy. Some resistance bands are protected by nylon sheathing. These can be used by people with a latex allergy.

Finally, resistance bands vary in strength. The strength indicates the amount of resistance the band provides and therefore how much force you need to apply to pull or push it apart. Often, a number or color on the band indicates the resistance band's strength.
