Resistance bands
What are resistance bands?
Most people exercise to improve their fitness. Some do so to lose weight. Almost always, people exercise to get stronger. You challenge yourself, want to reach your goals step by step, and notice that you're making progress. Many gyms have equipment that you can adjust to increasing weights or weights at different levels for this purpose. At home, while traveling, or when you don't like using equipment or weights, resistance bands offer a solution.
Resistance bands These bands can be used for strength training, but also for other sports, such as step workouts, yoga, Pilates, and aerobics. They are often made of rubber and latex and are also called fitness elastics. The Dutch translation is "resistance bands," a name often used. Resistance bands are lightweight, making them easy to take with you to the gym or while traveling. This allows you to do your workout anywhere, your way: at the gym, at home, or while traveling.
What do you use resistance bands for?
You can use resistance bands in many different ways and for various purposes. The most common purpose is to make your workout more difficult, gradually increasing your strength. For exercises aimed at strength gain, you can use fitness equipment at the gym. If you don't work out at the gym, the equipment is often busy, or you're not a fan of fitness equipment, you can still choose to use your body weight. This is only possible to a certain extent. As you gradually become stronger, you'll eventually need more resistance than your body weight can provide. Moreover, you can't use your body weight for every exercise. That's why using resistance bands is recommended. For example, you can stand with your feet on a long resistance band and pull the elastic up with one arm.
Besides making your workout more challenging, a fitness band can also specifically target certain muscles, thus training them more effectively. For example, certain arm exercises primarily target your biceps or triceps.
Resistance bands can also serve as support during a workout. By hanging from a long resistance band while doing a push-up, you don't have to push your full weight up. The resistance bands give you a helping hand. Start with a high-tension resistance band and gradually reduce the resistance. This way, you'll gradually become stronger until you can do a push-up unsupported.
Finally, resistance bands can be used for stretching. This allows you to stretch muscles that wouldn't be possible without a resistance band. It also allows you to deepen the stretch.
You can use resistance bands to work out anywhere you want: at home, at the gym, and while traveling. On vacation, you're no longer dependent on a gym. Simply throw a resistance band in your suitcase and you can keep working out.
What types of resistance bands are there?
Although fitness elastics can all be used for the same purposes, they come in all sorts of types, levels, and materials. The level is determined by the amount of resistance the elastic provides. This is often indicated by specific colors or numbers. The different colors then indicate the levels.
There are also several types of resistance bands, each with its own characteristics:
- Roll: This is a long, coiled resistance band that you can cut to size. You can tie the ends of the cut piece together to form a loop, or you can use it as a tube.
- Tube: This version consists of an elastic band with two handles at the ends. During the workout, you hold these handles and pull them apart, for example. The tube is primarily used for training arms, shoulders, back, and chest.
- Mini loop: This resistance band is a short, continuous elastic band. You place it around your calves or thighs to target specific muscles. You can also hold this resistance band securely with both hands while stretching.
- Long loop: This is the longer version of the mini loop resistance band. This fitness band allows you to make larger movements. It's suitable for the exercise where you stand on the band and pull it upwards.
The material of resistance bands
Resistance bands can also differ in the material they're made of. As indicated, they're primarily made of rubber. Some resistance bands also contain latex. This is important for people with a latex allergy to be aware of. Other resistance bands have a protective layer, such as nylon. This protects the resistance band from damage and can prevent people with a latex allergy from touching the material.
Regardless of the material the resistance bands are made of, it's important to protect them from moisture, extreme temperatures, sweat, chemicals, and perfume. If a resistance band does come into contact with sweat during a workout, for example, clean and dry it thoroughly after use. This will ensure its longevity. It's also recommended to occasionally dust the resistance band with talcum powder. This will prevent the elastic from sticking together.
