What is a resistance band?

You can exercise to improve your fitness, lose weight, and become more flexible, but also to get stronger. The latter is the reason many people exercise weekly. To achieve this, you need to do exercises that gradually increase in difficulty. This way, you challenge yourself and become a little stronger week after week. Of course, you can use machines, weights, or your own body weight for this. But to avoid being dependent on these and for versatile workouts, use a resistance band.

A resistance band Also called a fitness elastic or resistance band. It's a type of elastic that provides resistance during your workout. You can use it for strength training. They're also often used in other sports, such as yoga, aerobics, step workouts, or Pilates.

A fitness band is usually made of rubber with latex added. They're very lightweight, making them ideal for travel. This allows you to do your workout anywhere: at home, at the gym, or while traveling.

Using a resistance band

A resistance band can be used for all sorts of purposes. First and foremost, it strengthens your muscles. Of course, you can also use fitness equipment and weights based on your body weight. However, you do need a gym to use these machines, and they can be busy. Besides, not everyone is a fan of using these machines or heavy weights. 

Resistance bands can provide the resistance you need without relying on machines or weights. Place a mini loop resistance band around your calves, stand on one leg, and push the other leg out to the side. This will work all sorts of muscles in your legs. It also allows you to target specific muscles, strengthening them in a targeted manner.

Additionally, a resistance band can provide support during exercises. For example, by hanging from a long resistance band while doing a push-up, it takes less effort to push yourself up. Gradually use lower resistance so you gradually use more of your own strength and become stronger. Eventually, you'll be able to do a push-up without support.

Strength training shortens your muscles. Therefore, it's important to stretch properly. You can also use a resistance band when stretching. Muscles that you can't stretch without equipment can now be stretched. Moreover, you can stretch the muscles deeper, lengthening them further and increasing their flexibility.

Different types of resistance bands

Resistance bands come in all shapes, sizes, and materials. Fitness bands are often made of rubber, to which latex is usually added. To protect the material and for people with latex allergies, some resistance bands have a protective nylon coating.

The levels indicate how much resistance a resistance band offers. This is indicated by a number and often by different colors.

Finally, there are four types of resistance bands:

  • Roll: A long, coiled resistance band. Cut off the required length of elastic. Use it as a tube or tie the ends together to form a loop.
  • Tube: An elastic band with handles at both ends. You hold the handles and pull them apart, for example. 
  • Mini loop: A short, continuous band. Hold the band with both hands or wrap it around your calves or thighs to target specific muscles.
  • Long run: The longer version of the mini loop. This allows you to make larger movements during exercises and gives you a greater range of motion.
