Pilates block, when do you use which one?

A Pilates block can be used during Pilates classes. Often, you don't do specific exercises with them, but they serve as tools to help participants get better at the exercises.

Pilates blocks vary in size, thickness, hardness, and material. For example, some Pilates blocks are smaller in length, width, and thickness. These often serve different functions. A small, thinner Pilates block is more likely to be used under your head than a large, hard Pilates block.

We offer a variety of Pilates blocks. Some are harder and some are made of softer material. We prefer to use the harder Pilates blocks for seated exercises because they provide good resistance. The athlete sits securely on them. We use the soft Pilates blocks as support under the head, allowing the athlete to tuck their chin and relax their shoulders (and shoulder blades).

Which block would you use when and what does the range look like?

To describe the different Pilates blocks, we use the following three categories: 'harder' Pilates blocks, 'softer' Pilates blocks, and Pilates blocks of a different size.

'Harder' Pilates blocks

Within the harder blocks we have two Pilates blocks in our range:

  • Larger Pilates Block: You can use this block as a support under your head or to sit on. We prefer to use this block only as a "sitting block." This is because we have softer blocks that are placed under the head, and most of our users find them much more comfortable. The dimensions of this block are: 30.5 cm x 20.5 cm x 5 cm.
  • Smaller Pilates block: You can also place this block under your head. It's often used for this purpose. You can also use it to sit on. The dimensions of this block are: 20.5 cm x 15 cm x 2.5 cm.

The main difference between these two blocks is their size and thickness. The smaller block is half as thick as the thicker block, and is also 10 cm shorter in length and 5.5 cm shorter in width.

'Softer' Pilates blocks

The softer blocks we offer don't differ in material, but in size. Both blocks are made of recycled foam and are much softer than our other blocks. These are therefore ideal for use as a pillow. The only difference between these Pilates blocks is their thickness thicker pilates block has a thickness of 5 cm and the thinner block of 2.5 cm. For example, if an athlete lifts their neck high, you use the thicker block, while if the client lifts their chin slightly, you can use the thinner one.

Pilates block with a different size

We also have Pilates blocks in a different size. This is the wedge. It's a block that slopes downwards. This block is often used for support while sitting, for example, for pregnant women.

We have this block in different sizes and made of different materials, namely:

  • The Pilates wedge Made of 100% sustainable cork, this version is super light to transport. The dimensions of this wedge are: 60 cm x 9 cm x 3 cm.
  • The Pilates wedge is made of plastic. This wedge is made of EVA foam. This material ensures a secure fit and prevents slipping. The dimensions of this wedge are: 50 cm x 15 cm x 5 cm.
