Pilates balls

What are Pilates balls?

Pilates is a sport that involves alternating various exercises. These exercises strengthen your muscles and improve your posture and flexibility. To perform these exercises with focus and for a versatile workout, Pilates balls are the ideal sports accessories. You can use them in a variety of ways.

A Pilates ball is also called a gym ball or yoga ball. You can lie, sit, and lean on it for Pilates exercises. The balls are equipped with anti-slip material, which provides much better grip than a regular ball and makes them much less likely to slip. This makes them safe and optimal to use both in a Pilates studio and in a Pilates class at home.

Various pilates balls

There are two types of Pilates balls that differ in several areas: soft balls and fitness balls.

Softball

Soft balls These are smaller balls, ranging in diameter from 17 to 27 cm. They're made of a soft material, allowing you to hold them securely with one hand. Softball sizes are often indicated with a specific range, for example, 17 to 19 cm. It's difficult to specify the exact size of the ball, as this depends heavily on the amount of air and the manufacturing process. The best softball for you depends on your personal preference and the Pilates exercises.

Fitness ball

A fitness ball This is a large Pilates ball, also known as a sitting ball or Swiss ball. It's made of elastomeric plastic. This material is very elastic, soft, yet firm. By inflating it with less air, you make the ball extra elastic and soft. The more air, the firmer the ball. The diameter of a sitting ball varies from 45 to 85 cm. A specific size is recommended depending on your height and how you use it. If you're 1.65 to 1.85 meters tall, a ball with a diameter of 65 cm is best. If you're taller or shorter, a different ball will be more suitable.

Because you regularly use fitness balls by leaning on them with your full weight, they have a specific weight capacity: 150, 300, and 500 kg. When choosing a fitness ball, it's important to consider not only your weight but also the intensity of the exercises you'll be doing. If you put a lot of force on the ball, it will require a higher weight capacity.

How do you use Pilates balls?

You can use Pilates balls in all sorts of ways, depending on which type you use. A softball You can use it for support, to make exercises more challenging, or to facilitate a specific exercise. You can use it to train your balance, flexibility, and coordination.

A fitness ball You can use the ball to strengthen your body, relax your muscles, or as a chair. By sitting, leaning, or lying on the ball, or by gripping it during certain exercises, you strengthen your muscles and stabilize your spine. To relax your muscles, you can lie on your stomach or back on the ball. This stretches your back and abdominal muscles.

A exercise ball You can also use it as a chair to improve your posture and strengthen your core. Because the ball is unstable, the muscles in your core have to constantly contract to stay upright. This gradually strengthens these muscles. You'll soon notice that your posture on a regular chair will also improve.
