What are foam rollers?
You know that feeling when you've really worked your muscles in Pilates and have to climb the stairs the next day? Or when the class was mostly arm exercises and you want to lift something afterward? That muscle soreness tells you you've done your best, but it's not exactly pleasant. Foam rollers offer a solution.
Foam rollers are cylindrical tubes of foam. They are also called foam rollers or massage rollers. You roll a foam roller over your muscles. This stimulates your blood circulation, which in turn improves the removal of toxins. Previously, they were mainly used by physiotherapists. These days, they can also be found in many homes, Pilates studios, and gyms.
You can massage your muscles before, during, and after Pilates with a foam roller. Besides being a great training aid for Pilates, foam rollers are also often used for strength training and yoga.
The use of foam rollers
By using foam rollers before Pilates, your muscles loosen up. Any stiffness in your muscles will diminish, leaving you feeling much more flexible. This makes it easier to get into certain poses right from the start of the class and to generate more strength. This also significantly reduces the risk of injury.
Foam rollers can also be a solution if you regularly suffer from stiff or tense muscles. Knots can develop in your muscles, which can be very bothersome. Rolling over these areas with foam rollers reduces muscle tension. This reduces or even eliminates the pain entirely. You're essentially giving yourself a massage.
You can also use foam rollers after your Pilates class. Because they facilitate the removal of toxins, muscle recovery is promoted. You'll experience less muscle soreness and be able to give it your all in the next class.
Finally, foam rollers are useful tools for various Pilates exercises. They can provide support during floor exercises, stability exercises, or exercises that improve your mobility.
It's important to use a foam roller correctly and at the right time. The amount of exercise and the symptoms you experience will determine whether it's advisable to use one, and the appropriate firmness. It's not advisable to use a foam roller for acute pain, swelling, or redness. Consult a physiotherapist if you're unsure.
Various foam rollers
There are different types of foam rollers. These vary in firmness, for example. A firm foam roller works the muscles more directly, which can be more painful. For some muscles, this is very effective, such as your neck and lower back. Other muscles are better massaged with a softer foam roller.
Foam rollers also vary in length. The most suitable length depends on the intended use. Want to easily carry it in your bag? Then a small foam roller is best. If you regularly want to massage the entire width of your back or treat both legs simultaneously, a long foam roller is recommended. Unlike the firmness, the length of foam rollers doesn't affect the effect. It only reflects the actual use.
Finally, foam rollers come in different shapes. Most foam rollers are round, but some are semi-circular, allowing you to lay them flat on the floor. This is a great tool for stretching or massage. By laying them upside down, you create an unstable surface, making it ideal for balance exercises. Foam rollers also come in the form of a massage stick. This stick has two handles and nubs in the center. These allow you to massage specific muscles very specifically and apply the right amount of pressure.
