A foam roll, what is that?

A foam roller is often cylindrical and made of hard foam. It's a versatile tool used to improve muscle balance and flexibility. Foam rollers are now widely used in daily life by all kinds of athletes. While previously primarily coaches and physiotherapists used foam rollers in their treatments, they are now used for "self-myofascial release," also known as body massage.

A foam roll is a cylindrical massage roll that is mainly
is used for muscle pain, recovery from (mild) muscle injuries, strengthening muscles
and increasing range of motion.

What do you use a foam roll for?

You can use a foam roller to improve balance, flexibility, and muscle tone. One of the main reasons for using a foam roller is to reduce muscle soreness. After a massage with the foam roller, the muscle soreness experienced will diminish without compromising performance. Rolling with the massage roller stimulates blood circulation, which allows for better removal of toxins. Rolling also makes muscles more flexible, making it easier to perform certain exercises or perform certain tasks.

You can also use a foam roll to eliminate trigger points, also known as muscle knots. Rolling will apply pressure to reduce muscle tension and stiffness. Despite the slight pain, try to relax the muscle to eliminate the knot.

All the benefits in a nutshell. A foam roller can provide…
  • Reduce muscle pain and improve balance and performance;
  • Eliminate muscle knots and vprevent injuries;
  • Increasing flexibility.

Preventive use of foam roll

Besides using a foam roller after a workout, for muscle soreness, or to treat trigger points, a foam roller can also be used preventatively. Using a foam roller before a workout improves blood circulation. This promotes the removal of waste products and reduces the risk of injuries and muscle soreness. The massage roller can be a tool for increasing mobility after, but also before, exercise without negatively impacting performance (think stretching).

The use of a foam roller depends on the amount of exercise you do and your symptoms. If you have any doubts, always consult your physiotherapist. Do not use the roller if you experience acute pain, redness, or swelling.
